Is the Siberian hypo-allergenic?
There is a lot to talk about the hypo-allergenic qualities of the Siberian cat. In order for you to decide if a Siberian cat is right for you, let’s talk about the facts. To clear up the number one myth about Siberian cats: there is NO guarantee you will not have an allergic reaction to a Siberian cat! Hypo-allergenic means less-allergenic, it does not mean non-allergenic. There is no such thing as a non-allergenic cat! There are many catteries and websites claiming these cats can be placed with anyone who is normally allergic to cats. This is simply not true.
Another very common myth is that people seem to think they are allergic to cat hair. Not true. Cats produce a protein called FEL-D1 in their saliva. By cleaning themselves it is transferred to their hair, and causes pet dander. You are not allergic to cat hair; you are allergic to the protein in the saliva that ends up on cat hair. The cat dander cannot be filtered out of the air, and it will spread all throughout your house. The reason Siberian cats have hypo-allergenic qualities is because they produce less of the FEL D-1 protein in their saliva.
Siberians produce much less of this Fel-D1 allergen protein then any other breed. Because of this, the siberian cat is often a good choice of allergy sufferers.
I get a lot of request from people wanting me to send them a fur sample. I usually do it but you need to be aware that it is a very debatable test. It might give you an idea but it is not like visiting the cattery in person. It might not give you an accurate reading on your allergy level.
Also, it might take some time for your body to get used to the presence of a kitten in your own house. Even though you came and visited the cattery and hugged our kittens and adults, when you go home actually with your own kitten, you might react for some days. It might take up to 2-3 weeks before reactions are totally gone. If you have severe reactions, then it might best to return the kitten to the breeder. Your health should always come first.
If you are allergic, and you are planning on buying a siberian kitten from our cattery, make sure that we discuss this. There is a special clause in our contract in case the placing of a kitten does not work out due to allergies.
Breeders guaranteeing you that siberians are non allergenic are just looking for a quick sale rather then informing you of the truth!
Breeders that claims they tested their kittens for allergy levels are misleading. Kittens don't produce much allergy levels until they are much older!
Breeders claiming their kittens are low in allergen levels because the parents have been tested low are misleading, low allergen levels can produce sky-high allergen level kittens!
